When I approach the subject of still life, I like to add elements of fantasy. I wanted to paint this objects for there beautiful surfaces and added the "pink elephant" I had made as a child. I then added the translucent elephants some coming in/out of the shadows, and a few about to wreak havoc pushing over the art class or about remove the top. I painted this on a slick board, a very challenging surface but appropriate for the subject matter and the way light reflected on them.

    Christmas Dreams

Like "Pink Elephants" this painting is on a gesso board with a slick surface, a challenging surface to paint on. The way it reflects light worked well for the translucent Christmas trees. I added whimsy with the balls suspended above the trees like planets among the twinkling Christmas light "stars" and added the one decoration that "fell" and lays broken amongst the garland. Some of the decorations are from my childhood like the large one purchased when I was born and the one on the left filled with spun glass called angels hair.

This painting was the result of a difficult visit to an acquaintance who was caring for a new baby and whose marriage was collapsing.  All the elements including the small room, the smothering leaves for a roof, and the winter in the background are representative of her struggling with her situation and her eventual decision to start life again under better circumstances.
